Acknowlegements

The archaeological investigations reported here are the results of three seasons of fieldwork: the first in June/July 2001 at CA-MNT-1748/H, the second in August 2002 at CA-MNT-910 and -2181, and the third at CA-MNT-1918 in June/July 2003. The work was done as part of informal archaeological training sessions, and the field teams were composed of a student volunteers from California State University San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) overseen by professional staff from Cal Poly and other institutions. The success of the excavations was due in large part to the more than able efforts of these crews. The field team in 2001 included students Noah Arnold, Leanna Flaherty, Leroy Laurie, and Michelle Powell; volunteers Willie Duddles, Hedger Lee, Dave Makar, and Nathan Stevens; and supervisors Kelli Basket, Jefferson Haney, Allyson Schwartzenberger, and William Stillman. The 2002 field team was composed of students Joel Barnard, Angela Barrios, Megan Clark, Michelle Powell, and supervisors Kelli Basket, Jefferson Haney, Leroy Laurie, Dave Makar, Allyson Schwartzenberger, and William Stillman. Elise Wheeler also provided invaluable supervision on a volunteer basis. The 2003 field team included students Katherine Anderson, Joel Barnard, Michael Biaggi, Shannon Hogrefe, Holly Kirkwood, Leon Smith, and Stacy Sullivan, and supervisors Angela Barrios, Kelli Basket, Jefferson Haney, Leroy Laurie, Dave Makar, and William Stillman. Special thanks are also due to Leroy Laurie who served as camp cook for all three seasons, providing the crews with nothing less than gourmet faire on a daily basis. Post-field laboratory processing for materials from CA-MNT-1748/H was completed by Leanna Flaherty, Leroy Laurie, and Michelle Powell under my direction. Laboratory work for materials recovered in 2002 was completed by students in ANT-310, (Archaeological Laboratory Methods): Angela Barrios, Andy Dean, Holly Kirkwood, James Machado, Keely Meulmester, Megan Nelson, Sara Roscoe, and Michael Shipsey. Laboratory work for the 2003 season was completed by Angela Barrios. Robert Johnson served as field cartog-rapher in 2001 and 2002 and completed final site maps for CA-MNT-1748/H, -910, and -2181. Scotty Thompson completed the mapping duties for CA-MNT-1918 in 2003. Important logistical support for the undertaking was provided by Lorene Cabrera and Joyce McAlexander of the Cal Poly Foundation.

Special studies and ancillary analysis were provided by Craig Skinner (obsidian sourcing and hydration), Judy Porcasi (bird and mammal bone analysis), Ken Gobalet (fish bone identification), Leroy Laurie (invertebrate analysis), Jefferson Haney (debitage and shell bead analysis), Beta Analytic (radiocarbon analysis), Laboratory of Archaeological Sciences, California State University, Bakersfield (immunological analysis), Douglas Kennett (isotopic analysis), and Thad Van Bueren (analysis of historic artifacts from CA-MNT-1748/H). Artifact illustrations were composed by Rusty van Rossman. Randy Milliken provided some useful insights on the shell beads from CA-MNT-1748/H.

Special thanks to representatives of the Salinan Nation, Doug, Nancy, and John Alger, who year after year treated us to fine local hospitality. They have made it a true pleasure to conduct archaeological research in Salinan territory. Additional thanks to Adrianna Jackson and Kari Sprengler from the FHL Cultural Resources Office for facilitating final completion of the project and for useful comments on earlier drafts of the report. Special recognition also goes to Brian Codding for tireless, careful attention to a multitude of tasks, including assembly of the final document and preparation of the collections for curation at Fort Hunter Liggett.

Thank you all!
