Readings
- Text: Findley and
Rothney, Twentieth Century World, 5th edition..
- Collateral Readings:
Burton and Riedlsperger,
An Introduction to the Modern World
- Historical Atlas of the World.
(Hammond)
- You will also need
two blue books, one for the mid-term and another for the final. For both
the mid-term map quiz and the final map quiz you will need to buy outline
maps of the World from El Corral. If you elect to do the map assignments
(see below) you will need to additionally buy another World map and one
of Asia.
- Periodical
literature: One of the purposes of general education courses of
this type is to provide students with a foundation of knowledge that that
is part of being educated beyond the training specific to their chosen
vocations. Part of being an educated citizen is reading a good newspaper.
I read the New York Times every day and occasionally will
list articles, under "Today," that are interesting and relevant to our
study of modern world history. Click here
to go to the "periodical literature" page for the exact citation.
- Quizzes:
Click on quizzes for a general description and tips on how to study for
them. For the quizzes (the mid-term and the final as well) you will need
Scanton forms. They are included in your materials packet.
After each quiz a short discussion of the points
raised in each question will be posted. To access this discussion, click
on Quiz Analysis in the frame to the left.
- Reading for Content:
discussion of content literacy and a guide on how to read
the materials assigned in this course for maximum effectiveness.
- Map Assignments:
OPTIONAL. However,
if you choose to complete these assignments, you may earn up to an additional
115 points for the course. The percentage total on which your final grade
will be calculated would therefore be 565 rather tha 450. In the past students
have typically found that they can raise their overall percentage by doing
these homework assignments.
- Regardless
of whether you choose to do the map assignments, you will be responsible
for knowing the material the assignments are designed to help you learn.
This material will be tested on two map quizzes.
- Map Quizzes:
There will be two map quizzes, each worth
25 points. The first will take place during the first twenty minutes at
the beginning of the class following the mid-term. Click
here to see an example
of the kind of questions
that will be used. Which blank maps you will
need for each quiz will be announced.
