EXAMINATIONS

Spring Quarter 2005

The mid-term examination (100 points): There are two options. You may not look at one exam and then decide. Rather, make up your mind BEFORE you come to the exam, which you intend to choose.

• A 33-question multiple-choice examination (100 points). Some of the questions will be taken from the first three quizzes, others will be variations of those questions and still others will be based specifically on lecture material. If you are uncertain about an answer and feel that you can illustrate that your knowledge of the material by explaining you answer, you may do so in a blue-book. Thus you can earn either partial or full credit for an answer that does not conform to the grading key, if the reasoning qualifying the answer is sound. You will need a bluebook and a scantron blank.

OR

• An essay examination. (100 points)

  You will need a bluebook and need to choose either one 100-point question or a combination of questions whose total possible points equals 100

There are two 100 point questions, both focus on some aspect of modernization theory and it application to specific case studies.

There is one 75 point question, one 50 point question and five 25 point questions. Some will ask you about films seen, e.g. Marxism, Meiji Revolution, World War I, definitions, e.g. liberalism, nationalism, imperialism, feudalism, mass society, etc. I plan to go over the website and specifically write questions for some of the items where I have indicated in red that you should read a link

AND, the period after the above mid-term, there will be a

• Map Quiz. (25 points). This will be a fill-in-the-blank format in which the text will supply you with historical information about the item to be identified. You will then write in the name of the item and place its number in an appropriate place on a blank outline map. See the website for sample questions. The items to be identified will have been among those you have located on previous map-homework assignments. You will need both the 1914 and the post-World War I map blanks of Europe AND a blank map of the world from your packet

For missed exams there will be a make-up period, Friday afternoon, the last day of classes.

The Final Examination (225 Points)

This exam will consist of three parts:

• a. Objective section: 50 questions, 100 points. This part of the exam is cumulative in that the first 18-20 questions will come from the first half of the course. The same opportunity as offered on the mid-term to qualify an answer by short essay will apply. Bring a Scantron. For a study guide for these questions, click here.
• b. Essay section: 100 points. The questions will be based on material covered since the mid-term, but in the case of those countries that were studied as models of modernization, you should be able to relate their 20th century experiences to their pre-20th century development. Bring a bluebook.
• c. A map quiz, comparable to the mid-term map quiz, but based on the map assignments completed since the mid-term. (25 points). Bring the following Exam Maps: The Middle East between the Wars, Europe in the Age of the Cold War and Post-Cold-War Europe AND a blue-on-white outline map of Asia to be purchased from El Corral
