Chapter Eight: Learning

Chapter Overview

INTRODUCTION

This chapter covers two perspectives on learning. The first is rooted in behaviorism and covers basic conditioning theories. Social-learning theories take advantage of mental processes in explaining learning processes.

KEY CONCEPTS EXPLAINED

Research in learning was initially heavily influenced by the behaviorist perspective ( rewind to a description of the various perspectives in psychology chp 1) which focused on observable events only. Behaviorism therefore focused on conditioning which involves simple associations between environmental stimuli and responses. The two types of such conditioning covered in this chapter are:

  • classical conditioning
  • operant conditioning

The Social-learning approach included the study of mental processes to explain learning. From this perspective, learning is the not so much a change in behavior as a change in knowledge that has the potential for affecting behavior.

  • social learning theories
