Use the questions below to organize what you have learned from the different readings. Questions for the final exam will be selected from among these questions. There will be four (4) questions on the final worth 10 points each for a total of 40 points. Remember to bring a blue book and scantron sheet to the exam.
1. According to Norma Field, reparations to former comfort women is wrapped in 'linguistic obscurity.' What does she mean by this? Why is it done? and What impact does this have on the issue?
2. What are the main points of controversy in the comfort women issue? Who is involved in the controversy and what positions do they take? See articles by Field, Chung, Park, Yang and Kim.
3. What issues does Fujime Yuki raise in her article on the relationship between class and prostitution? How does her analysis differ from that of Song Youn-ok?
4. How do the 3 women in Pat Steinhoff's article resemble the wives of small businessmen? How do outsiders perceive Shiomi, Nagata and Shigenobu? and How do these women differ from these perceptions?
5. What does Nancy Rosenberger mean by "fragile resistances?" How does the relative power of various social institutions shape the position of women in modern Japan and how can individuals make use of this?
6. How do blue collar women studied by Glenda Roberts differ from Millie Creighton's department store workers? and How are they similar? What is the connection between women workers and the "Japanese-style management" system does Shinotsuka find?
7. How have most of the Dietwomen studied by Sally Hastings reached their positions? Are younger women entering politics following the same path? How have women politicians been treated by the LDP? What obstacles to political participation for are identified by Kubo and "Gelb?
8. In Kitridge Cherry's book Womansword (see webpage linked by constructions in the schedule), vocabulary is used to illustrate attitudes toward women in Japanese society. Select 5 terms from the list and explain the perception of women as indicated by these words.
9. Describe the structure of education in Japanese society and relate that to the work and family positions for Japanese women. Refer to appropriate articles in the readings. What barriers to educational opportunities for women in all three countries does Confucian views of education create?
10. What impact has the concept of patrilocal residence had on the institution of marriage and definition of family in all three cultures?
