Mission:
The Visual Resources Collection (VRC) supports the images needed for instruction, research and study of the Department of Art and Design's faculty and students. While the VRC primarily supports the art and design curriculum, it also serves as a resource for the Cal Poly community.

Collection:
The VRC's image collections consiste of digital images and slides. Both contain collection contain over 43,000 images of works of art from the prehistoric period to the present. Holdings include painting, architecture, sculpture, photography, prints, and Asian art. The collection's strongest holdings are in Italian Renaissance, and nineteenth century French and twentieth century painting. The digital image collection also includes images from WorldImages (http://worldimages.sjsu.edu), of the California State University IMAGE Project. Instructional videotapes, DVDs, and reference books on artists and art movements are also available. Online access to the digital image collection is currently under development. Although Cal Poly faculty and registered students are welcome to borrow material for course presentations, art and design faculty are given first priority.

How to Check out Material:
Patrons may checkout items by presenting a valid Cal Poly identification card and by filling out a VRC circulation form. New faculty and students should make an appointment with the curator to be oriented to the collection and its procedures. All items must be returned during the VRC's operating hours.
Checking out slides: For best results, patrons should conduct preliminary research before visiting the collection. The collection is largely organized by medium, country, site/artist, and subject. Bringing a list of artist names and/or sites will help patrons locate slides more easily. Once oriented to the slide collection, patrons pull their own slides by using check-out drop cards which are assigned by the VRC staff. Please allow enough time to pull slides since they must be checked out during regular operating hours. Slides must be appropriately stored in carousel trays or slide boxes when they leave the collection. They must be returned directly to VRC staff so that they can be checked against the VRC circulation form. Removing slides from the Cal Poly campus or failure to return them in a timely manner will jeopardize borrowing privileges and result in fines.
