Winter 2007 Newsletter

FROM THE CHAIR, DR. WILLIAMS   Greetings. On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Political Science Department, I welcome you to a new academic year at Cal Poly. It is our hope that you will have a productive, successful year. We are delighted to welcome four new faculty members to our department. Dr. Den Hartog (Ph. D., U. C. San Diego, 2004) is returning to California after a two-year stint at Northwestern University. He will teach courses in American politics and political economy. Dr. Moore (Ph. D., Johns Hopkins, 2004) taught for two years at the University of Vermont. He will be teaching law and theory courses, both introductory and advanced. Dr. Leithner (Ph.D., University of Colorado, Boulder, 2006) brings a specialty in International Relations. They join Drs. Arceneaux, Den Otter, D. Long, Settle, Shepherd and I as full time faculty. Drs. Gooden and Lutrin continue to teach for us part of the year. Lecturers Drs. Bressler, Evans, Keleher, and E. Long will teach in their areas of specialty as well. They are joined by Dr. Theobald, our fourth new faculty member, who will teach courses in methods and public policy.

ADVISING

The College of Liberal Arts web site at www.calpoly.edu/~cla , addresses a number of advising issues, some (not all) of which are also addressed in the Catalog. Bonnie McKim is our technical advisor and is located in 47-11C. Appointment signups are made at her office. Any student who is within four quarters of anticipated graduation should make an appointment to complete a Concentration Statement and a Request for Graduation Evaluation.  These forms are available in the Department Office (47- 14).

INTERNSHIPS

Students are encouraged to complete an internship while at Cal Poly. Fliers which describe our many internship opportunities are available on the department website and in the department hallway (47-11). Internships are an excellent way to receive academic credit while gaining experience in your field of interest. Undergraduate internships can be arranged with Dr. Williams. Graduate Internships are arranged with Dr. D. Long. Additional information can be accessed at http://cla.calpoly.edu/internships.html

E-MAIL ACCOUNTS

All students need to activate Cal Poly e-mail accounts. The department communicates important information about the curriculum, events, and major requirements via your Cal Poly account. Go to ... http://newemail@calpoly.edu

MPP

Dr. Shepherd is director of the MPP program. MPP students need to complete a formal study plan within the first two quarters of the program. Changes are submitted on an amendment to the plan. Forms are available in the Department office (47-14). Additional information can be accessed at http://mpp.calpoly.edu/

CLUBS

The Political Science Club and the Undergraduate Law Association provide opportunities to get involved at the department and college levels. For information on the Political Science club, contact Dr. Leithner, faculty advisor of the club. Dr. Den Otter advises the Undergraduate Law Association and can be contacted for further information about ULA.

Students who qualify may join Omicron Gamma, the local chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha (the national Political Science honor society). You may pick up an application for membership in the department office. Students who are interested in membership should also contact Dr. Keleher, faculty advisor of Pi Sigma Alpha.
