“Unpacking Diversity and Excellence: Lessons for Institutions of Higher Education”

Gilda Ochoa - Academic Profiling cover

Gilda L. Ochoa, the 2016 Susan Currier Visiting Professor will give a talk, on April 7 at the Performing Arts Center Pavillion, entitled “Unpacking Diversity and Excellence: Lessons for Institutions of Higher Education.”

Calls for diversity and excellence are common in institutions of higher education. However, how often do we take stock of what we really mean and whether what we say matches our individual actions and institutional practices? How might seemingly well-intended movements for diversity and celebrations of excellence maintain the status quo and reproduce inequality?

This talk applies lessons from an extensive high school study and examples from Cal Poly to explore the gaps between what we say and what we do and how we might create myths to offset disconnections. By exploring some of these gaps, this talk highlights areas for individual and institutional transformation.
