Welcome from the Dean

Welcome to the College of Liberal Arts, home of the university’s programs in the visual and performing arts, communication disciplines, humanities, and behavioral and social sciences. We educate students for success in a complex and dynamic world by providing them with knowledge and a Learn by Doing understanding of human culture, language, communication, development, cognition, behavior, artistic creation and expression, social and political processes and organizations, and expressive technologies. Our outstanding faculty generally teaches in a small-class setting using innovative pedagogies to fully engage students in the learning process. The integration of “hands-on, Learn by Doing” activities into the curriculum enables students to master and apply concepts from any of our 17 majors and 33 minors to real life settings.

As a liberal arts college in a leading polytechnic university, we also endeavor to connect liberal arts courses to the scientific and technological disciplines at Cal Poly and aspire to be leaders in multidisciplinary efforts at the university. Multidisciplinary activities provide critical opportunities for students to work in the spaces between disciplines, where many solutions to problems are found, and learn to function as a collaborative member of a problem-solving team. As a result, our graduates are well prepared to be productive employees or graduate students, conscientious citizens, and informed members of the global community. An undergraduate education at Cal Poly is truly an outstanding value!

Douglas L. Epperson, Dean, CLAThe college also offers excellent master’s degree programs in English, history, psychology and public policy. Finally, the college is home to Cal Poly Arts, the Faye and Alex Spanos Theatre, and the University Art Gallery. Through these organizations, and in conjunction with the Performing Arts Center, the college presents the best of student visual art exhibitions; student drama, dance and music performances; and performances and exhibitions by local, regional and national touring artists for the university and central coast communities.

I invite you to explore our website to learn about the aspirations and accomplishments of our students, faculty, staff and programs.

Sincerely,

Douglas L. Epperson, Dean
